Broadway
United Under 14's finished their season off in style, completing a
unique treble, with victory over Lakeside in the league cup final at
Cheltenham Town's Whaddon Road ground. Following on from their
Worcestershire County Cup win over Kidderminster Lions and their fourth
successive league title Broadway went into the match brimming with
confidence. Broadway began the livelier and were unlucky not to go
ahead when Alex Hammerton hit the crossbar after five minutes with a
powerful effort from just inside the area. Lakeside then began to
get on top and had a couple of half chances and near misses. They
thought they had taken the lead with a well worked goal but the
linesman's flag denied them. The Broadway defence of Scot Gourley,
Luke Young, Ben Hoskins & Luis Sone were holding firm and the midfield
of Charlie Stock, Sean Cooke, Connor Hensey & Jacob Knight were linking
well. Both teams were creating openings but couldn't find
the net with strikers James Schembri and Hammerton unlucky not to find
the net. Then midway through the half a breakout from the Broadway
defence saw Luke Young put a fine ball through to Schembri who coolly
slotted past the advancing keeper. The second half was a different
story with Broadway dominating for long periods and James Bishop in the
Broadway goal only a distant spectator. The introduction of Sam
Steele, Harry Parker, Drew Clarke & Jordan Cowley tightened up the
midfield. Two minutes after the restart a superb free-kick from
Stock flew past the Lakeside keeper, who was routed to the spot, to
double the lead. From that point it was one way traffic. A neat
pass from Schembri opened the Lakeside defence and Sean Cooke neatly
chipped the advancing keeper. Five minutes later saw the goal of the
match. A well worked move saw Cooke cross the ball in for Connor
Hensey to hit the ball on the half volley right into the top corner with
the keeper given no chance. Schembri then made it five after being
put through by Cooke and with almost a carbon copy of his first goal.
Steve
Sone's Man of the Match goes to Connor Hensey & Alex Hammerton who both
battled tirelessly from the first to last whistle.

4 Kidderminster Lions 2
Sunday
5th March 2009
Broadway
United Under 14's won their first County Cup with an excellent display
against a good Kidderminster side. Broadway got off to the worst
possible start after two minutes with Kidderminster taking the lead with
a well taken goal which flew into the top corner. Broadway were
playing the better football and created a few chances before midway
through the half Sean Cooke was put through and coolly lobbed the keeper
from twelve yards to bring the scores level. Broadway then began to
dominate and produced their best football of the match. James
Bishop in the Broadway goal was rarely troubled with the back four of
Luke Young, Ben Hoskins, Luis Sone and Scot Gourley playing superbly.
The midfield of Jacob Knight, Charlie Stock, Connor Hensey & Cooke were
working tirelessly, creating chances for strike partnership of James
Schembri & Alex Hammerton. Broadway took the lead five minutes
later following a corner from Cooke which Hoskins managed to direct into
the far corner. It wasn't long before Hammerton & Schembri added
to the tally to put Broadway three goals ahead before half time.
Hammerton chased a long ball over the top, shrugged off two challenges
before unleashing a shot into the far corner & then Schembri was put
through and fired a shot beyond the advancing keeper. The second
half began with both side playing some good football.
Kidderminster gave themselves some hope when they scored their second
goal with a far post tap-in. Kidderminster started pressing but
couldn't find a way past a solid Broadway back line. Harry Parker
replaced Young and Jordan Cowley replaced Gourley. It was Broadway
who created the greater share of chances to increase their lead but
settled in seeing the game out.

Sunday
8th March 2009
A
hat-trick from James Schembri put Broadway Utd in the driving seat for a
fourth successive league championship against title contenders Lakeside.
Lakeside started the brighter but it was Broadway who came closest to
scoring with a rasping shot from front man Alex Hammerton from a tight
angle which flew narrowly wide. Lakeside then had a good chance go
begging but Hammerton wasn't going to be denied and he grabbed the first
goal of the game with a neat curling shot into the top corner from
another acute angle, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. Broadway
then began to dominate and the Lakeside keeper made some fine saves.
He made a great save from a Luis Sone free kick but he could do nothing
however with the first of Schembri's goals, a low powerful shot from
just inside the area. Broadway came out the for the second half
full of confidence and within five minutes had doubled their lead with
two well taken goals, completing Schembri's hat-trick. Both goals
were executed with efficiency and set Broadway up for a high score.
It wasn't to be however with the Lakeside keeper in top form denying
both Sean Cooke & Charlie Stock. Then some slack marking from the
Broadway defence allowed Lakeside to pull a goal back. A shot from
outside the area nestled into the bottom corner of James Bishops net and
Lakeside had their tails up. The game was more evenly matched now but
Bishop was rarely troubled and Broadway saw the final few minutes out.
Broadway are now three points behind Lakeside with two games in hand and
a win against Forest Green next Sunday will see them go top for the
first time since September.

4 Badsey Rangers 2
Sunday
16th November 2008
A
hat-trick from Badsey old boy James Schemberi and a wonder strike from
Charlie Stock was enough to gain all three points for Broadway.
Badsey took the lead after a fairly even opening quarter of an hour with
a hotly disputed goal. A goal line clearance from Drew Clarke was
deemed to have crossed the line from the referee standing thirty yards
away! This seemed to inspire Broadway who found some nice passing
movement and they began creating several chances. Schemberi scored
his first following a corner from Sean Cooke, rising above the
Badsey defence to powerfully head home. Two minutes later Stock
hit the ball from twenty five yards into the net off the underside of
the crossbar with the Badsey keeper rooted to the spot. Broadway's
defence of Luis Sone, Connor Hensey, Zac Brant, Luke Young and Harry
Parker were keeping Badsey efforts to a minimum with Cooke, Jacob Knight
& Drew Clarke working hard in midfield. Alex Hammerton was working
tirelessly up front as usual. Then just before halftime Schemberi
got his second with some quick footwork and a low shot into the corner.
The first minute of the second half saw Schemberi complete his hat-trick
with a neat shot into the corner and effectively end any chance of a
Badsey fight back. Both teams wasted several chances before
another disputed goal in the final minute. A linesman flag was
ignored by the referee, again badly positioned some distance behind
play. With the Broadway defence and keeper not waiting for the whistle
the Badsey striker fired home expecting the play to be brought back, but
amazingly the goal stood. Despite some other strange decisions the
two teams fought well in a very fair and entertaining match.

5 Cleve Colts 1
Sunday
28th September 2008
Connor
Hensey scored his 100th goal for Broadway smashing home a rebound from
six yards out following a save from the Cleve keeper. Broadway
started the better of the two teams with some neat flowing football
against last years runners up. Alex Hammerton opened the scoring
in the first minute with a neat lob into the far corner giving the Cleve
keeper no chance. Broadway were piling on the pressure and it
wasn't long before Broadway doubled their score with a free header from
Jacob Knight from a corner. Midway through the half James
Schemberi beat two players before curling a shot into the far corner
beyond the keepers reach. The midfield of Knight, Sean Cooke,
Charlie Stock and Harry Parker were battling well and creating chances
but Broadway couldn't add to their tally. Cleve began creating
chances for themselves and a last ditch tackle from Hensey saved a
certain goal. Cleve finally pulled one back with a great effort
which went in off the crossbar giving James Bishop in the Broadway goal
no chance. Cleve should have scored again just before halftime but
the shot was put wide. Broadway made some changes for the second
half but the defence of Hensey, Luke McDonagh, Ben Hoskins & Luis Sone
were rarely troubled. After Drew Clarke had made it four their was
only one winner and Broadway spurned many chances before Hensey slammed
home near the end.

9 Forest Green 1
Sunday
14th September 2008
Broadway United under 14's began their defence
of the league title with a tricky tie against Forest Green Rovers &
to make matters worse their two main strikers were absent due to
injuries.
Both teams began brightly with chances being
created at either end. However ,after 10 minutes Broadway were first
to score when Connor Hensey set up the ball perfectly for Sean Cooke
who managed to get the ball around the keeper and slot home from a
tight angle. 5 minutes later, Broadway keeper James Bishop played a
perfect ball to Cooke who passed to Hensey and he made no mistake
from 10 yards.

Charlie Stock battles in midfield
Then just two minutes later Harry Parker made
a great tackle on the edge of the box and chipped the keeper to make
it three. Broadway were now dominant and Hensey was again put
through by Cooke which set him up perfectly for goal number four.
Then it was Hensey's turn to become provider, this time he set up
Charlie Stock for his first and Broadway's fifth with neat chip from
the edge of the box into the far corner.
Broadway began the second half where
they ended the first with Jacob Knight scoring the sixth goal of the
match, with a cross shot which managed to sail over the keepers head
and into the corner of the goal. Just two minutes later Broadway got
their seventh with Stock getting his second.
Forest Green then pulled a goal back but it
wasnt long before Stock got his hat-trick following a pass from
Knight, running through and unleashing a left foot drive high into
the net. Knight then won the ball and was through one on one before
seeing his shot hit a post but the rebound was fired home and
Broadway despite playing the whole game with ten men finished up
with an emphatic victory.
The Broadway defence of Drew Clarke, Ben
Hoskins, Luis Sone and Luke McDonagh coped with everything Forest
Green could throw at them with the thee man midfield of Knight,
Parker and wingers Stock and Cooke supporting lone striker Hensey.
A great team performance with no man of the match award which was
too difficult to award due to the whole team showing determination
and a fantastic team spirit.
Man of
the Match: Each and every player could have won it today

(Any
suggestions as to what the defender is doing?? - witty replies will be
published on the website. Looks to me like a separate picture has
been stuck onto the original - and not very well either !! )

Cup Final
Siddington
1 Broadway Utd
3
Sunday
4th May 2008
Broadway United completed their second successive league and cup double
with victory over Siddington at Whaddon Road. Broadway dominated
from the start and should have been ahead before the break. Harry
Naylor, Jacob Knight, Charlie Stock and man of the match Sean Cooke were
creating chances from midfield for front men Connor Hensey and Alex Hammerton.
Hensey missed two chances, one rebounding off the post and another well
saved from the Siddington keeper. Broadway's constant pressure
with good passing football looked like telling but the Siddington keeper
was in good form also keeping out Cooke, Stock and Hammerton. The
Broadway defence of Ben Hoskins, Luis Sone, Luke McDonagh and Harry Lowe
were rarely troubled but dealt with everything they had to efficiently.
The impressive Naylor was replaced by Drew Clarke following an injury.
John Carter replaced Lowe at right back at the start of the second half.
The half began with more Broadway pressure and it was Cooke who finally
broke the deadlock with a shot across the goal which was heading for the
far corner but with a defender helping it over the line. It wasn't
long before Broadway scored their second with Stock put through and
firing home from the goalkeepers initial save. The game evened out a bit
from then and James Bishop pulled off a couple of good saves but then
Cooke scored his second goal with a neat chip into the far corner.
The game seemed beyond reach but Siddington pulled a goal back with ten
minutes remaining following a deflected shot sending Bishop the wrong
way. But Broadway saw out the final minutes to record a deserved
win.
Man of
the Match: Sean Cooke
